Here we go again....!

Well, we put David on the train to Boston on Wed, July 5, where he's meeting up with a friend. They'll be driving to Maine to climb Baxter Peak on Mon from Katahdin Stream Campground, then back down. Then David will start on his 2006 adventure on Tues, July 11.
This is what the Appalachian Trail Conservancy has on statistics for those starting in Maine heading south to Georgia:

Southbounders 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005
Katahdin, Maine 275 286 291 233 217
Harpers Ferry, W.Va. (1,170 miles) 109 109 88 102 95
Springer Mountain, Ga. (2,100+ miles) 57 60 60 45 46
Completion rate: 21% 21% 21% 19% 21%

Southbounders hike from Katahdin to Springer Mountain in one continuous journey. They represent about 10 percent of total reported 2,000-milers.

Northbounders hike from Springer Mountain to Katahdin in one continuous journey. They represent more than 65 percent of reported 2,000-milers.
Flip-floppers complete the Trail in one trip, but with an alternate itinerary. They make up about 5 percent of reported 2,000-milers.
Section-hikers complete the Trail in more than one trip. They represent about 20 percent of total 2,000-milers.
Wow! We'll do our best to keep the guy well fueled.
Allez les bleus!!!

Steve,
This is the list as of the present. Bear in mind that this will change - David has already knocked off one day on his first week - I think he was trying to run away from the biting bugs... I'll try to remember to keep it updated. Thanks!
